Microsoft’s Kinect sensor may soon be integrated into a TV or laptop. In Microsoft Forum held this week, Craig Mundie, Senior Advisor of the President revealed Kinect’s development direction.

Mundie said that Microsoft’s R&D objective is to miniaturization the Kinect. “Price as low as possible, and the size as small as possible,” he explained, “I wish to put Kinect into this Surface border.” When asked whether we would see a built-in Kinect laptop recently, Mundie said he believed that such product would eventually come out, but not that soon.

In the new vision center, Microsoft integrates the Kinect sensor into a series of displays. It seems the sensor size is smaller than the market’s, but Microsoft refused to disclose whether they are producing the Kinect 2.

Microsoft is trying to have the Kinect integrated into the device, but Mundie thinks that there are many challenges to bring this technology to the tablet/laptop. First, the Kinect sensor can’t work in the daylight. Because the sun is a giant infrared light source, which will submerge the Kinect infrared.

Obviously, Microsoft also faces many challenges to bring Kinect into other devices. However, the company’s Kinect for Windows shows that they are looking for additional use method. The previous rumors claimed that Microsoft is cooperating with Asus to develop a laptop with built-in Kinect, but such product has not yet surfaced.
