“Apple won big with Friday’s $1 billion U.S. patent judgment against Samsung. In a sense that seems fair, as Apple revolutionized the cell phone and rival products from the Korean manufacturer and other competitors mostly look like copycats,” Richard Beales opines for Reuters Breakingviews. “But if the fear of future lawsuits forces Google, which makes the Android operating system used by Samsung, to push the technology and hardware makers forward, users could benefit, too.”

“The California jury took Apple’s side in almost all the company’s claims. These ran the gamut from the design of hardware to the appearance of icons and the gestures that users apply to a touchscreen to control it,” Beales writes. “[Samsung] seems to have miscalculated. Documents in the case showed that Apple had offered to let Samsung license certain patents for $24 per device. Based on the Korean firm’s smartphone and tablet sales, the Wall Street Journal calculates the cost would have been a bit over $500 million so far. Striking that deal with Apple could have turned out cheaper, especially since the judge can triple the awarded damages.”

Beales writes, “But the Apple-Samsung case doesn’t have to hold back progress. If the Android camp – which includes Google, Taiwan’s HTC and other handset makers – take the verdict as a challenge to out-innovate Apple, consumers could find themselves with exciting new options. And if rivals can steal Apple’s thunder rather than echoing it, they’d be able to note smugly that the Cupertino company’s seemingly comprehensive patent victory in 2012 was Pyrrhic.”

According to some media, Intel’s next generation Core graphics processor Haswell models will not continue the HD definition method, but to use the GT1, GT2 and GT3. The specific performance rank is GT3 the strongest, GT1 the weakest.

We can see from this list that the desktop level Haswell’s dual-core and quad-core versions are only equipped with the GT2 core graphics. But among the mobile level Haswell platform performance we can find the more powerful GT3.

Medias analysed that the desktop-class requirements to graphics is high or very low, therefore, it is sufficient to configure a moderate core in charge of the daily application of the graphic display. Desktop users with higher demand will select discrete graphics. For mobile platforms, the number of pursuit of high performance is not little, among which a large part is very concerned about the size and weight of the laptop. Therefore, the configuration of the stronger core graphics is more appropriate.

There are reports that the developers found that OS X 10.8.1 will extend battery life. But after the test of the MacBook users, the OS X 10.8.1 disappointed us in improving battery life.

Although the developers confirmed the battery life is greatly enhanced after the mountain lion is updated, the test results are completely different in real life.

The Mac portable models improvements using the Core i5 and Core i7 processor from 2011 to 2012 are the most significant, the website OS X Daily said.

After a series of tests, the conclusion of the site is that computers with Core 2 dual core processor almost have no change in battery life after upgrading the mountain lion.

There are reports that, in different MacBook Air models, the OS X 10.8.1 does not improve battery life.

MacBook Air 13 “Core i7 (in mid-2012)

OS X 10.8.1 – 4:36

OS X 10.8 – 4:33

MacBook Air 13 “Core i5 (in mid-2012)

OS X 10.8.1 – 4:48

OS X 10.8 – 4:31

MacBook Air 11 “Core i5 (in mid-2011)

OS X 10.8.1 – 3:26

OS X 10.8 – 3:32

MacBook Air 11 “Core 2 (end of 2010)

OS X 10.8.1 – 5:45

OS X 10.8 – 5:47

Of course, this test may be unscientific,  an additional process running in the background may cause the battery time reduced from 10 minutes to an hour, but it seems that the OS X 10.8.1 doesn’t bring significant improvement in battery management.

The 2012 MacBook Air battery life decline is the fastest, a few months ago it can run more than eight hours, but now the use time is reduced by half.

Any lithium-ion batteries battery life will decline after several months use, but such a sharp fall is not normal.

Apple never said the battery drain patch was added in the OS X 10.8.1, and it’s said that Apple is commit to this work, and they hope to see this function in OS X 10.8.2 (in testing phase) .
